WHO WE ARE
This is Non-Toxic San Diego Club.
We are a student club based in San Diego with our members coming together from various high schools in the county.
As a team, we work together to bring awareness to the local community about pesticides and the potential harm to citizens’ health. Our primary goal is to advocate the San Diego City Council to ban the use of commercial, toxic pesticides and switch to organic alternatives. As high school students who all live in this city, we hope that with our voices combined, we can push for a better future where citizens of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the beauty of San Diego without harmful toxins.
WE DID RESEARCH
We conducted research on pesticides and their effects on:
– Health
– Neighboring waters
– Lawsuits
– Alternative options
To gauge the public’s opinion and concerns about pesticides, we conducted a survey across the county.
WE TOOK ACTION
Teaming up with Non-Toxic Neighborhoods, our team has had made several steps towards our goal.
We started out by sending out emails to city council members. After a few months, we had our first scheduled meeting with Councilman Chris Cate, where we presented the problem and offered possible solutions. Quickly following that, we held our second meeting with San Diego’s Parks and Recreation Department with successful results: three public parks are now designated with pilot programs that are not being sprayed with pesticides. In addition to taking action city-wide, recently, our students initiated a styrofoam campaign to spread awareness about the harms of styrofoam. We also met with a member of the San Dieguito Union High School District Board to advocate for the implementation of Composting Bins.
We participated in the API Student Internship in Community Services hosted by the Alliance of Chinese Americans San Diego.
